About Attorney Kristal Knox
I would say I had a pretty different but adventurous path than most to practicing law. I come from a carnival family which owns the traveling Reithoffer Shows carnival. It has a great history going back to 1896 and is still one of the largest in the country and I spent many years working on the road with my family during the summers while attending school in Central Pennsylvania. It was an exciting life of meeting new people and seeing new towns, but it actually sowed the seeds of my interest in the law. It was during that time I developed an interest in the law handling risk assessment and insurance when customer claims would inevitably arise. I started to follow the lawsuits to see what happened with them and that’s when I first got into the law. Cases where someone wearing high heels in the rain to a carnival would fall and my family would have to pay out a settlement particularly aggravated me. After high school, I attended Ithaca College with the intent to pursue my talents as a singer majoring in music, while still spending my summers traveling with the carnival. While at college, I took a courtroom communications class where the end result was a trial. I loved it. My mentor at the time encouraged me to take the LSAT at the end of my college career. After I graduated, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do and was still undecided about law school so I worked the carnival full-time for three years. I’m also a child of divorce so I really think that informs my work in family law. Looking back on things, I’m really proud of my parents. They handled it so well. Neither side bad mouthed one another to us, they let us be children. I don’t like to see my clients bringing their children into the middle of their disputes.
My biggest strength is being able find a balance between knowing when to work with the opposition and when to be aggressive. I believe if you say something you do it, you don’t break your word. I don’t like the game playing. Let’s just try to solve these people’s problems without being overly litigious. Believe me I know when it’s time to be aggressive on behalf of my clients, but I do believe it always serves the best purpose to find a way to get along, especially when children are involved.
What I Find the Most Exciting in Legal Practice
When I get an outcome for my clients that improves their lives and protects their children is when I get most excited. There have been so many rewarding cases. My first divorce trial comes to mind during which I secured custody of my client’s son, alimony, and the property she deserved. It was a contentious case where the husband damaged the home in anger over their split. I feel really good about that case. She’s such a wonderful woman and she ended up getting what she needed. The worst times are when I have cases where children are being emotionally or physically harmed. I don’t like to see my clients bringing their children into the middle of their disputes. On the other hand, I will be their biggest advocate when I see wrong being done. I have a really big heart for children and their best interest.
My Personal Life
I met my husband through the carnival. His family ran some of the games and traveled with us on the road. We eventually came to Florida to live in Hernando County in my husband’s hometown of Brooksville. That’s where I began practicing family law. I was the first in my family to leave the carnival for another career path. I think another avenue of compassion for my clients comes from being a mom. We have a six-year-old and recently had a second child. We love movie night and we are very active in our church. It is so important to find a balance between your family life and professional life, making sure you have time with your children. Your kids are only young once.
