About Attorney Ernesto Cespedes
I am a resident of South Florida and have practiced law for over 23 years. The only time I left my beloved state was to attend law school in Chicago, Illinois. I received a degree in Finance and Marketing at the University of Miami, a master’s certificate in Healthcare Administration at St. Thomas University, and then went on to earn my Juris Doctor at the University of Illinois at Chicago – John Marshall Law School. Because of my insatiable appetite for knowledge, I applied and was accepted into what was the number one health care law program in the United States – The Beazley Institute of Healthcare Law at Loyola University in Chicago. That is where I earned my LLM in Healthcare Law.
One of my greatest strengths and a huge advantage living in South Florida is that I am fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. I’m originally from Cuba and have spent significant time in other South American countries. I have a profound understanding of various Hispanic cultures, which gives me an edge over other attorneys, especially when dealing with divorce and custody issues.
I have extensive trial experience, but I enjoy finding a resolution through mediation because it is much less traumatic for all parties, especially the children.
What I Find the Most Exciting in Legal Practice
I am very goal-oriented and I find immense satisfaction in helping to change the lives of my clients. I have done many diverse things in my career and I think my current practice area provides the most satisfaction. Family law is a combination of terrible issues, emotions, and extreme ups and downs for people involved in the court system. I try to connect with my clients, understand their situations, and then my professional challenge is to work to achieve my client’s goals. I enjoy both the challenge, and seeing my clients succeed.
My Personal Life
After graduating from law school, I worked for a large law firm in the Washington, D.C. area, with a team of lawyers who were all Harvard or Yale graduates. Despite my non-ivy league education, the firm placed me in a position to oversee thirteen temporary attorneys, as part of a defense team in one of the largest healthcare lawsuits in American History. Healthcare Corporations of America were forced to pay over $631 million in civil penalties and damages after alleged false claims filed with Medicare and other federal health programs.
I returned to the Miami area and began working for a medical malpractice firm before teaming up with my brother to start our own firm. Together, we defended clinics and other healthcare providers, but after the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) laws changed we decided to part ways, and that’s when I opened my solo law firm.
In addition to practicing law, I managed and promoted Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters in the U.S. and Canada. I even helped design and produce a line of fight apparel and gear.
My list of qualifications will never truly show my personal ambition, drive, and concern for my clients. But for those that insist seeing an exact list – here it is:
